Surrendering/Rehoming Pets

We know it can be challenging to have to surrender or rehome a pet. We receive many requests asking us to take in cats and we help as much as we can, but we do not have a shelter facility and rely on a network of foster homes which are continually full.

Lost/Stray Kitties

If you think you have found a lost pet or you have found a stray kitty that seems ill or injured, please contact the animal shelter where the cat is located so they can post a found animal report and allow any possible owners time to find their pet. After the stray hold is up, the kitty will be placed up for adoption and the shelter will reach out to rescue groups to see if there are foster homes open. Animal Allies cannot take in lost pets without first having them go through the county process. This way we can ensure everything possible was done to reunite the kitty. You can also post in Facebook groups, on the Nextdoor app, or on the Ring app to see if anyone can identify the kitty.

You can also contact your local shelter for TNR resources if you find kitties that do not seem to have owners or are shy or have kittens.

Surrendering and Rehoming Options

If you are unable to keep your pet and you adopted them from a rescue or shelter, you may be contractually obligated to return your pet to them.

Please review your paperwork or call the rescue/shelter for further information.

If you adopted your pet from Animal Allies, they will need to be up to date on vaccinations before we can take them back in. Please contact us for more information.

If your pet is up to date on the vaccines and is fixed, you can also advertise them on rehoming and adoption sites:

You can also try posting on Nextdoor, in your community Facebook groups, or in these general groups:

If you need assistance with resources or training, shelters like the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and Animal Welfare League of Arlington offer helpful support.

Many shelters also have foster homes, provide excellent veterinary care, and are able to get kitties adopted quickly due to adopters visiting their facilities.

Here are additional rescues and shelters we recommend in the area who may have foster homes.
